Disk Utility problem

Two days ago I installed OS X 10.3. All seemed well. Yesterday when I switched on with the in box in Mail as my default opening screen I found that Mail froze FOREVER and I could do nothing else but switch off at the mains. I switched on again and hovered my cursor over the Mail icon in the dock so that I was able to Force Quit it before it froze again. I then ran Mac Janitor, and MacSweeper and then thought to run Disk Utility. However, with Disk Utility I found that after a few minutes it stopped and I got the message "Disk Utility Internal Error. Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk management tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility" Mail seems to be working OK this am - FireFox seems to be taking longer to open pages. Anyone got any ideas please ?

Google applejack for os x. Download and install make sure you get the one for 10.3. after you install restart your mac while holding command S. when the text stops scrolling type applejack and hit return. pick the auto option. when it finishes tell it do due auto once more. Then restart and good luck.

Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk management tool and cannot continue

To fix this, go to the Receipts folder - Library/Receipts

remove all iTunes.pkg files and then run Disk Utility.

If you Google "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk management tool and cannot continue", you'll find tons of articles about this, including several on the Apple discussion boards. The fix is what BobW suggested. If you want to learn more about it, the articles are helpful.

Bob, I have removed all iTunes.pkg files and successfully run Disk Utility this am.
Dennis, thank you for your suggested reading.
Northmendo - I tried your suggestion re Applejack - it got as far as repairing permissions - this may take some time - a square sort of cursor appeared and kept slowly writing lines of dots accross approx 3/4 of the black screen. This went on for over 24 hours until I got tee'd off and pulled the plug on it.
To all of you - I am still having intermittent freezing problems - especially in Mail but occasionally on the internet. Effectively this is stopping me getting any work done so if you have any further ideas please let me know.
Thanks for support so far.

Boot from your 10.3 disc. After the installer appears, go up to the Installer Menu to Disk Utility. Run that to Repair Disk.

We seemed to be working OK for a couple of days and then the mail freezing came back. So today I followed your above instructions and booted from the 10.3 disc then ran repair & verify permissions. Restarted and now worse than ever, Mail either freezes or simply won't open. I don't know what to do next ?
BTW thanks for your help thus far,
Carold

Hello All
Today I can't open Mail but get the following:

The mailbox “~/Library/Mail/POP-carol@mail.onetel.com/INBOX.mbox” is currently locked by “Carol Davis” on host “88-144-61-60.ppp.onetel.net.uk”. If you open a mailbox that already is in use, you may damage its contents.

with the options Open anyway, quit or open read only

Does anyone know what this means please ?
Thanks
Carold
