Display Deterioration

yes-i should have included that.
imac24"-2 yrs old

since posting it has occurred to me that next time it gets bad i should change to my tiger
partition. if its there then i will know for sure its HW. yes? another thing i didnt mention is that it seems to worsen later in the day.

& thanks

... when it has been in use more hours and gets warmer.
You could try running the hardware tests - insert install disc 1 that came on that Mac, and boot holding down D key, and run the tests in looped mode (ctrl+L to loop the test), at least for the evening or ideally overnight, and in extended test.
Do you have any added RAM?

no added ram just the 2g it came with-
thanks for the test advice although im not sure i understand exactly.....
after booting in D will i be prompted to run a test? and is it then that i ctrl+l?
will i choose 'extended test'
what will i see as a result? an explanation i can understand? or computer speak :)

'twould be a good idea to run that test, then ask your questions. Post the results that you get, as you may see a code that someone may help you with...

i only have one install disc and nothing seems to happen when i boot holding down the D key.
shut down-power on-D down-wait fro grey screen & tone-release D CORRECT?

anyway- i have disk warrior and tech tool both of which i ran the hardware test and passed.
does that count?

Obviously, you have also installed Leopard, but that's not the disk you want.

Your original install set is 2 DVDs, with grey labels. You would use disk one of that set. Is that what you have?

As long as that 10.4 disk is a grey disk, and not a black one, you should be good to go.
Disk in the drive, restart, holding the "D", and that should boot to the hardware diagnostics.

yes, it launched a hardware diagnostic as described. i ran it all night but found little had changed this am. there was a progress bar that hadn't moved and there were no discernible results. so, i guess i need some more guidance when someone has a sec----
thnks

i discovered the vent under my imac was covered in i/4 inch of nasty desert
crud! now that i have cleaned it the deteriorations have stopped and so I surmise it was overheating--
