Display problem after sleep

I left my G5 for a few hours and it is set to put both the Computer and display to sleep mode after 1 hour. When I came back and woke it up the display had gone very low resolution, almost like a low res colour negative.
I tried resetting the pram and all that achieved is that on start-up the opening mac screen with the spinning wheel is crystal clear again, but after that its back to low res.
I dont have another computer or monitor to try, but the fact the first Mac window is fine suggests its a computer problem of some kind ?

Any ideas what else can be done ? Diskwarrior maybe or is that too drastic ?

Control-option-command-8. Or switch back to "White on Black" instead of "Black on White" in the "Universal Access" section of the System Preferences, under "Display:" in the "Seeing" pane.

Yes?

thanks for that idea, I'm just trying diskwarrior now so cant try it out, but its not that kind of "negative" effect, its like a very low res pixelated look and you cant make out any text/writing on the screen. Its almost like if you try and look at a photo with very few colours set up, like 8 bit colour ?

Perhaps the "contrast" got adjusted in the Universal Access pane of the System Preferences?

I dunno... can you attach a picture of the screen?

This is odd, I used diskwarrior which improved it quite a lot. I took a snapshot of the screen and looked at it on my Mac laptop ...and its fine ?? So I guess it has to be the monitor then ? but in that case wouldnt the white mac loading screen also be fuzzy ?
If its a problem is with lets say my graphics chip ....wouldnt the snapshot be fuzzy when viewed on the laptop too, or are they not connected ?
