Disposing of bad battery?

I called the Apple techs and store in my city but couldn't get a decent answer.
I recently got a new battery for my old clamshell iBook and now I was wondering how to properly dispose of it. I didn't want to chuck it into the trash bin without checking to see if there's a better way. Thanks

You could take it to any number of places. In the US you can take it to a Batteries Plus. Perhaps you can take it anywhere where batteries are sold (as the primary item). Perhaps check the yellow pages for batteries and/or recycling. In germany, you can "recycle" batteries by taking them to DM or Rossman's or others like this.
