... by doing a Clean Install vs a Archive and Install with Panther?

Yup, in my case Panther was MUCH faster and a lot more stable after a clean install.
It depends on the status of the previous system. If there are any bad files, they will remain and cause problems. I didn't have any problems, and i'm still running fine, although Font Book did cause some weird problems, needless to say i went back to a professional font management app, and removed everything font book changed.

Thanks for your replies.
I asked 'cause I already did a 'Archive and Install' and it went great apart from an initial ASM bug (which is fixed now). It also felt a lot snappier too. I normally would do a clean install but I was too impatient and didn't want the fuss of moving and reinstalling apps and prefs files. Anyway I took the time after your comments and did a clean install (after backing up of course). Im currently in the process of getting my prefs and other apps back together. Im not sure if I can tell the difference iin performance yet between this 'clean' install and the other.

PS. I believe that there is a performance advantage to doing a clean install although very slight in areas, and also it nice to get rid of all those old unused pref files and the like. The only drawback is the time in getting the system back up to production capability, so I have decided to do the remaining four company Macs using the 'Archive and Install' method (yes I purchased the 5 user family pack).
