Dockling Hexies run down

Most people don't use them anymore, they use menu extras instead. So there aren't too many people that develope 'em anymore.

what are they?

Little application-type things that live in the right side of the dock (next to the Trash). They display a menu when you click 'em.

This is basically why people don't use them anymore. Menu extras do the same exact thing, but don't take up any room in the Dock (and some people don't even use the Dock). The only advantage Docklings have over menu extras is that their icons are bigger. Which is not much of an advantage. :p

You can go to http://www.versiontracker.com and do a search for "Dock" - that'll list quite a few docklings you can try out.

Early releases of Mac OS X used Docklings for such things as Airport signal and Battery levels. Now these have been moved to Menu Extras.

You might also be interested in Konfabultor... it provides that same big, colourful look you used to use docklings for, and has a lot of functionality - if that's what floats your boat. ;-)
