Downloading and .dmg

MLE

I have the latest version of OSX and I want to download either Safari or Synergy for my iTunes. I can download it fine, but when I look at the picture, there usually is a white page with an image on it, but there's none. After trying to open or mount the Synergy, instead ip opens up Quicktime and tells me that Quicktime doesn't recognize the typr of file. Help me! Thanks, MLE

What? So confused.

1) What browser are you using?
2) Does a file actually download?
3) If file downloads what kind of extension do you get?
4) Have you tried to drag the file over Disk Copy (for .dmg files) or Stuffit Expander and see if they can them open them?

More info will help ;) Maybe screen shots too because i don't understand this white picture thing.

Sorry about the lack of info. More would help, wouldn't it?

Anyways, to answer your questions:

1) I'm using IE as of right now
2) Yes, the file actually downloads and is on my desktop
3) I'm trying to download .dmg files, or .sit
4) Yes, I have tried to use both, Disk Copy and Stuff It Expander. A little add-on, when I use either stuff-it or disk copy, it puts another icon on my desktop. It's supposed to be an image of a white papre with a corner turned over at one corner.......but it either is blank or it becomes a Text file.

Does that help any?

Ohhh ok. Got it. You're downloading a file from a site that's probably using PHP. Well this poses and issue at times and no one knows why. Re-name the file on your desktop with the proper extension and it should work.

If you download safari.dmg and attachment.php is on your desktop. Just rename it and it should work fine.

Try that.

Well, what do you mean by "attachment.php"?

I have tried re-naming the file, yet it still does not work. When I double click on it, and disk copy pop-up appears and says: "The Mount Image operation did not work. (-8816) The "safari.php" does not have a recognized file type."

I have also tried that with safari.dmg, still nothing. And the same goes for when I want to download the update for my iPod.

Any ideas?

Are you trying to download directly from apple? What is the file called on your desktop? If you get info on it what is it's size? Have you tried a different browser if you have one? Or tried a different download site?

attachment.php was an example i run into sometimes. I'll go to download something and that's what i get. So if it was supposed to be an image i just change .php to .jpg and it usually works.

I've tried downloaded directly from apple and from other mirror sites.

When I download it onto my desktop, it's named as "iPod.dmg" and I looked at the info and it's 5.2 MB...and it's a document. Safari is only 2.8MB which is also a document.

I've not yet tried a different browser.....for I would LIKE to but, I can't because of this problem.

My correction, I'm sorry.

When I download the safari file or the iPod updater, the fil is named as:

iPod126.dmg.bin
and
Safari.dmg.bin

Does that help any?

ok, so they have the right names and the right sizes but if you try to open them with disk copy it doesnt work. Weird. Have you tried restarting the finder? Restarting the computer? Disk first aid? ( restart holding down the s key. when the promp comes up type in /sbin/fsck -y
Keep doing that until you get no errors then type in reboot to restart. )

Will that help?

By the way. If you open system preferances and run Software Update they should both appear. Should being the key word.

I tried restarting holding down the "s" key like you have suggested, but it started up like it normally would have. Should I just give up?? LOL

And yes, I know. I tried running Software update, but it doesn't say any new updates are out. Straaaange.

Oh, and my disk fist aid says "That application or control panel is not supported by Classic".

I've got it pretty bad, don't I?

NO. Don't try to use classic to fix X. That will never work as far as i know.

Yes, as far as I know, a .zip file would de-compress absolutely fine! Thank you, I really appreciate all of your help!

As far as Classic, what do you mean by that? I can't NOT use Disk Copy without Classic having to start up.

what about applications/utilities in the OS X area?

in the finder go to the GO menu and choose APPLICATIONS then scroll down to UTILITIES and use that disk copy. That will understand .dmg files.
