downloading music onto nano

I'm getting an ipod nano second generation 2gb. I'm not allowed to buy music on itunes. is there other places where you can download music for free? (and be legal)
 
Yes - you can import music from your own CDs to iTunes, and use your own music to sync to the iPod. You certainly don't have to purchase music through the iTunes music store.
Legal free downloads of commercial music is an oxymoron. The music publishers (and most musicians) would say that there should not be free downloads of any music. (and the argument has been beat to death, I think :) )
