Right, I'm using my Powermac G3.
I've already got a Seagate 200Gb running as a master.
I've set the new seagate 160GB to slave, plugged it in. When i plug it in and bootup i get the old ? and finder icon. Then i get this:

So i unplug the new drive. It boots fine. I plug it in, Open disc utility, Nothing, About this mac, Nothing.

How can i get this drive to mount? is their a way of forcing it?? And why is the mac trying to boot via this drive? There is no jumper in it!

Thanks

Charlie

When you put in the new 160GB drive and jumper it to "slave," are you also setting the jumper on the 200GB explicitly to "master?"

Some drives allow you to jumper them as the sole drive on the hard drive chain (eg, Western Digital drives), and then when it comes time to add a slave drive, you must explicitly change the jumpers on the original drive to "master."

Yep 200GB is set to master. 160GB set to slave. I've tried limiting the drive, Setting it as a master too and cable select. Nothing.

How are you getting the G3 to see the "big drives"? It's not going to be friendly with drives over 128 GB without third-party hardware/software.

Not likely as he already has a 200gb drive.

Try setting it next to the CD/DVD drive. Sometimes drives do not like it to be together on a cable. This can happen between any brands and even with the same brand. If you do so, make sure the harddrive is master (and let the CD/DVD not connected for testing purposes.

Good luck, Kees

Thanks for the help guys.

What third party software will let me use my drive? That would be fantastic!

Back to thread: So I set the jumper to master on my 120GB?? and plug it in where the CD drive is?
I do have another IDE. Shall i just use that?

PS: I use one of these cables

Right. Now my drive doesn't work. Its on the other cable where the zip should be but. It doesnt mount.

Help!! Also: Does anyone know how to answer my previous question?????

I came across this last week on a g5 iMac, or the same symptoms at least and It looks like it might be a faulty drive. If you put the iMac into target disk mode the Mac it was attached to could see the disk using disk utility, but not the partition.

If I put the disk as a slave into a G5 it caused the same symptoms even if it was the only drive and reset to master. You could try putting the drive into one of your other Macs to check it out.
