DSL line acts strange

Hi everyone!
I'm new to OSX and this forum, I think OSX is great so far, but the internet connection is confusing me a little. I'm using earthlink DSL, configured using PPP.
occasionally I will get a message saying "the connection has been dropped because the host is not responding" - but I'm not doing anything! Sometimes the connection drops and will not reconnect, so I quit and re-launch "internet connect" and the session time is still ticking away, as if the connection has never dropped! Right now, the system tells me it was unable to maintain a connection, the connection status is at "idle" but here I am, writing a post on a forum and my e-mail client is running in the background!
What's going on? I know I'm online, but my computer seems to think otherwise! I can see this precarious arrangement going to s**t sooner or later, so I'd like to sort it out while I can.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Bert

Hi, Are you using PPPoE? Check your System Internet Prefs. PPP and PPPoE are different. PPP is for Dial up and PPPoE is used by most ADSL providers.

Let us know if you need more clarification.

correction, i'm using PPoE. Under the TCP/IP settings, I've got a choice of PPP or manual, mine's set to PPP. Then I've got another tab for PPoE settings, the box is checked for "connect using PPoE"

You need to switch to PPPoE.

Under "Network" in System Prefs choose the PPPoE Tab, check the box to enable it. Then put in your provided account name and password, probably the same info you used in MacPPoet in OS 9. You'll probably also want to check save password and show in menu bar for quick connection access from anywhere.

Let us know if you don't understand.
