DVD disc icon gone?

I've had my Mac Mini for roughly two months now, and by all means it was a successful upgrade from my previous configuration; a PowerMac G4@350/512Mb.

However, panic and destruction stuck this afternoon, when I was about to copy the contents of a dvd disc to a folder on my hard disc. This is, when I think of it, the ifrst time (abviously) I've been doing this task since my new system arrived.

On my old machine, the DVD disc icon appeared on the desktop upon insertion, but not so anymore. Indeed, the disc is fine, "DVD player" automatically launches, asserting that I'd want to play it for the moment.

I know the DVD is mounted under /Volumes, that I can reach with the terminal, and also copy to wherever I want from the terminal, but why on Earth can't I see my disc icon on the desktop anymore? This is distracting.

What's going on?

In the Finder, go to Finder --> Preferences and ensure that removable media is set to appear on the desktop.

Problem solved.

Embarrassing enough, as it turns out, i had not yet set the DVD region for my drive.
