DVD-region-code... What DVD exactly ?

Hi,
I want to know if the DVD code is about ALL types of DVDs or it concerns only Movies DVDs"
In my case, I have a Leopard American DVD (1) and I switched to the African DVD (5). Does it mean that it will not work ? I have never inserted them because I have no need to (for the moment).
Please help me about this if you can.
