DVDs locking up.

Hello tech folks,

I'm either having trouble with my DVD player or DVDs in general are unstable.

The disks just keep locking up and/or freezing. Far too often I've had to force quit and re-boot to get the machine runing again. Sometimes I even have to shut it down manually.

My maching is a G4 Mac Mini (OSX Tiger) with a gig of RAM and a 4X DVD+RW/CD-RW Super Drive. With that much fire-power I can't see why I'm having so much trouble.

I've seen $50 DVD players from K-Mart that operate without flaw. Have you heard of this problem with the Mini before?

Thanks,

-Brown Elk

You've omitted the history of the fault and what you've done to try to fix it so I'll suggest the obvious first: Repair Permissions.

My G4 tower doesn't give problems with bought or burned DVDs so I can assure you it's not "normal".

You have a couple years (at least) on that superdrive. When did you
last clean its laser lens?

Apple recommends against lens cleaner discs for slot loaders, but if
it's acting up, it can't hurt to try before replacing it.

I'd bet those WallyWorld DVD players are tray loaders. Rather more
durable than slot loaders.
