DVDs mount but not CD-ROMs

I first noticed I could no longer record CDs on either the internal or an external drive (Toast), and found CDs don't even mount. Everything is fine with DVDs.

Some missing driver?

10.4.11 on imac ppc g5

Seem to have lost my system DVD, might make restoring things a bit more impossible.


Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
 
The DVD laster reader is different than the CD laser reader in the drive. First take some compressed air (with the long straw like attachment) and tip the iMac on it's side (with the slot drive near you) and blow the compressed air in at an angle to get dust out of the drive. See if that helps.
 
Thanks Satcomer for the thought, I had pondered the drive optics issue, it had been so long since I had used a CD I was thinking some optics shifting mechanism had gummed up.

But I am seeing the same behavior in both an internal and external drive, unlike they would both have the same partial malfunction.

I still have to think it's a driver issue...
