I'd like to try dvorak.

but i think dvorak-US english would not be good when i type in italian; i get òàùèìé with one keystroke in italian normal keyboard. and if i need 2 keys to those in dvorak-US, it will very difficultly be any faster than my current!

i find only dvorak-US, dvorak for palm, dvorak for many palms, dvorak for BeOS (pc) .. but not dvorak italian for mac!! ('i'll use it with ibook)

can anyone find the international layouts for dvorak mac somewhere? help.. :p

How much faster do expect it to be with respect with the current keyboard ?

I've seen several "improved" keyboards since we don't have the technical limitations of the mechanical keyboard anymore. None was successful. The most interesting one was probably the 5 buttons mouse. But nobody did the effort to adapt to it. And probably nobody will do unless we can prove a very important improvement with a really minimal learning cycle.

I'm afraid that even the alphabetical keyboard (abcdef) will do better on a market point of view.

The next breakthrough will be the disparition of the keyboard... in favor of audio input.

Just for illustration:

that's the NORMAL = US-english dvorak.

in italian i use the keys ò à ù è ì é quite a lot. maybe up to 10 %. and having to use two keys to get those is a pain in the apple.

so, is there out a version of dvorak for macs with those keys with one keystroke?? i found italian dvorak but it was for palm. using us-dvorak will slow down when i'm not typing in english. :(

btw how many of u have tried any dvorak?

I've heard a lot of good stuff about Dvorak, but I believe it is designed to be fast when typing in English, so you won't necessarily get good results with Italian.

celeborn is most probably right: if you want to optimize for speed, each language will need another keyboard layout, depending on the most frequently used keys... and accentuation.

BTW I am impressed how fast teenagers can be writing SMS on the cell phone, with a 10 keys keyboard. Most of the speed is due to the software that is able to guess full words based on the first letters. Wouldn't this kind of software also significantly accelerate typing on a computer, adapting the favorite's dictionary with the type of documented that is edited (you don't use the same words with the same occurence frequency when typing a letter, preparing a presentation, or developing software).

okay ... i'll try dvorak in english only then ... feel too lazy to learn 2 more layouts..

anything but AZERTY!!! :p

no, n france ...

here abouts ...

the french AZERTY really sucks!!! it took me half an hour to log in to mail because i didnt realise numbers were on CAPS!!! and i kept on mistaking so i ended typing as normally..

The best thing about Dvorak is not speed. Your fingers move 1/11th as far -- at least when typing English words. This makes for a more comfortable experience, and less repetitive stress problems, like carpal tunnel syndrome.

I've been using Dvorak for nearly 20 years. At the time I switched, I was a professional programmer, spending 10-12 hours a day actually typing. I was never diagnosed with a problem, but my hands used to ache at the end of the day. I learned Dvorak, and the pain when away.

It ain't the speed, it's the comfort!

I use dvorak, it helped me overcome a mental block about touch typing due to handicap in the left pinky and ringfinger. I like it a lot, but have been typing a lot of french lately and it is a major PITA. The option key is not accessible to me.

I don't know about layouts but it is all software scriptable, so there should be one somewhere.

As for learning, Ten Thumbs from Runtime Revolution teaches dvorak as does MasterKey.

btw MS Office apps don't play well with dvorak! Sometimes they use the modified keys for commands and sometimes they don't! I don't know what the conditions are that make it so, probably connected to logging in with qwerty connected and then switching to dvorak with the app open...

There's a keyboard that uses qwerty/dvorak hybrid that tries to make it easy to use commands, but it is just as irregular as the other one.

I don't have that problem with any other program, one more reason to send the OO people a donation.....

But Gia, you're MS free so no problem :D
