Earbuds for 1st Gen iPhone

Hi folks.

I'm looking into getting some new earbuds for my old iPhone. They need to fit the recessed socket, of course - or I will also need suggestions as to which adapter for that will suit me best. :)
It would also be great if they were the "in-ear" type to reduce external noise and so they stay in my ear better.
In-line controls (for the phone and music playback) would be excellent, especially with a mic!

I've had the standard apple earbuds with both my iPods and the iPhone and they always break pretty easily with me. Maybe I don't look after them well enough but either way, first the rubber starts to come off the buds, then it starts to break away at the jack and eventually one bud will stop working all-together. With my iPods, I would just switch to any old pair of earbuds I had lying around - usually £2 ($3-4) a pair with in-line volume control (but nothing else). These tended to fit my ears better and I didn't notice any sound quality difference (I think I'm a little deaf, or at least insensitive to sound... :/ ).

Now, with the iPhone, the earbuds broke again.
At first I purchased a RadTech Headphone Socket Adapter so I could again plug my cheap-tastic earbuds in. But this adapter broke after I took good care of it and RadTech refuse to respond to my email to them.

Either way, I am now looking for either a set of "in-ear" earbuds which fit the recessed socket and have in-line controls with mic or a combination of earbuds and adapters to serve the same purpose.

I've read who-knows how many blog posts on possible replacements for the apple earbuds and none seem to come to a strong conclusion.

Any ideas or suggestions are very welcome.
