Easier way to type international chars?

Rather than pulling up the Character Palette every time and finding the character I want and hitting insert (mind you, I'm already using the Favorites tab of the panel to isolate my most often-used international characters), is there an easier way to type these out? Can I assign a key combination, for example, to get á? I noticed that Option+a gives me å. Can I re-assign this?

option e then press a. i type French everyday on the qwerty English format... you can buy a AZERTY keyboard if you are so compelled.

others: (remember - option i then let go of the buttons and press the desired letter... like (1+2) then 3)

ô = option i then o
é = option e then e
è = option ` then e
á = option e then a
ç = option c

that's about it for french.... after you write one french letter it's second nature.

is that all you need?
