emac "freeze"

What would cause my emac to all of a sudden "freeze"? When I restart it, it sometimes will not get past the first blue screen. It will often freeze when I have to click on the OK icon.
 
A corrupt system file, likely. Boot from your OS X disk, and run a permissions and disk repair in Disk Utility.
 
I've replaced the hard drive in my eMac twice. If yours needs it and you're handy you can get the instructions on the web but BE PATIENT. It needs a careful hand.
 
This doesn't sound like a bad hard drive yet, worst case scenario, you do an archive and install.
