eMac Monitor Dying ... Ugh!!

themacko

Barking at the moon.
I've had my eMac for about two years now. Within the past week or so the left side of the monitor is turning a greenish color. Does this mean that the monitor screen is actually dying or is there something I can do to fix it? I treally does suck that I paid so much money for this thing then after 2 short years it flakes on me like this .. especially since I can't exactly purchace 'just a new monitor.'

Anyways, I'm not sure if this was a question or more of a rant. I'm not very happy though.

Hi, well i have had my eMac for about 2-3 months or so. Basically i think its pretty normal that the sides go different colours. Usually when i swivel my mac on its swivel stand the monitor changes abit colour. I wasnt really happy with it either but i think thats just the way it is.

Anything magnetic close to the monitor?

Every time I've seen a tube go out, it's usually of one of the RGB colors at a time. So if it's turning greenish, then it would be the Red dying...but it should happen pretty much uniformly across the screen, not just a section of it.

What you're describing sounds like magnetization of the shadow mask. If that's the case, it may or may not be correctable. There is a trick to make a homemade 'degaussing coil' from a soldering gun...but with today's CRTs it's far less likely to work.

If you have anything with a magnet in it (or a magnetic field generated by it) close to the screen (speakers for instance), move it/them away and let the screen run for a few days...then see if it improves. If so, that was your problem.

I dont think its to do with magnetic interference mdnky - basically all i have that could do anything and thats the truckee cap on my eMac - and i dont think that would be doign anything :p ... I think its just a problem with the emac displays i guess and its happened to me and themacko and the only difference is that his/hers is 2 years old and mines 2 months old

No magnet near my screen, besides the built-in speakers and I would assume they have some kind of barrier around those. I tried swiveling the monitor around and I can't tell if that's doing anything.

This really doesn't make much of a difference but apparently my eMac is 3 years old! I didn't realize I've had it for that long; still too short of a life-span for the monitor to die, though. :( I suppose as long as it doesn't progress to quickly I can handle it for another couple of years.

Smithy, based on what you typed (what I could...er...understand of it) your problem and his are different. Your issue is when you turn the monitor and involves viewing at an angle, which has been present from day 1 (reddish on one side and greenish on the other?). His problem hasn't happened until recently and involves one area of the monitor from any angle.

themako, the built-ins are definitely magnetically shielded. I would be more worried about external sources than internal ones.

Does it make a difference when you turn the thing off for a while? Try leaving it off for as long as possible, then startup and see if it's more or less noticeable.

Do you have any way of connecting an external monitor that you know is good? If so try doing that and see if the problem is still there. If no problem, then it's definitely a CRT issue. If the problem insists, then it might be another issue like a video card or such.

3 years out of a CRT isn't that bad actually. I know you don't want to hear that <G>, but it should probably be said.

Ummm hmmm, mdnky you dont realise that even though the circumstances might be different of when the monitor actually does this, the point is and i hope you can understand this his is 3 years old and mine is only 2 -3 months old. And like i said it would have to be a problem with all models but affects the monitor. Oh and mdnky if you ment that you couldnt understand what a truckee cap is - its a hat thats been out for quite some time now i guess if people have style they would have one.

TheMacko, well like i said i have only had this thing for about 3 months or so, and basically sometimes when it happens just a restart will do it or basically just moving it around on the swivel stand. I think it would be a probelm that is wide spread amoung the eMac range. Well basically if you have any more problems just ring up apple if your apple care hasn't run out yet (assuming you have apple care..???) otherwise maybe just get a qoute on how much it would cost to get fixed. Hope everything works out for you and it gets fixed :) otherwise beat it with a shovel :p

I just forgot, go here http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?13@141.w26Ka6Thevl.55454@.2cd7f944 theres some topics that are similair to this one there.

Oh and also crt monitors last pretty long my hp pavillion 17" monitor is still running good obviously its not the best but i havent had alot of problems with it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. Luckily it doesn't seem to be getting much worse; I'll begin turning the thing off more often now and hope for an improvement. This 'ol eMac's gotta last me another couple years!! :)
