eMac with Leopard 10.4.5 refuses to boot

I was at my eMac when we experienced a power outage. Fortunately my UPC kicked in and I had time to perform a normal shut down. Several hours later I attempted to reboot.
• Either I get a gray screen or just an Apple logo. Other times i get the Apple logo and the activity indicator going around endlessly, till I force shut down.
• Attempts to start up from a OS X installer disc (C key held down at start up) yield the logo and the activity indicator endlessly turning also. Requires a force quit.
• Zapped Pram. No improvement.
• Reset PMU chip. No improvement.
• Safe Boot (Shift key during start up tone) yields apple logo and activity indicator for about 5 seconds and then the unit shuts down on its own.
• Depressing Shift key at start up, immediately after start up tone, yelds Apple logo only.
• Option key on start up yields small icon of start up partition on my HD and icon of Installer disc in my CD/DVD drive. Each has a small "X" in lower right corner of icon. Selecting either of these 2 icons and clicking on forward arrow yields apple logo and continuously rotating activity monitor.
• Using fsck -fy doesn't solve the problem.
• Once, while attempting to start up from the installer DVD, I got the Apple logo, the activity monitor, and after a short while the Apple logo turned into a circle with a diagonal line thru it. (I assume that is the equivalent of the sad mac, but for the DVD instead)
• Have now gotten to the point where a normal boot with no key board input of any kind and no installer DVD (OSX 10.4) in the Drive yields apple logo along with activity monitor and an auto shut down within about 5-10 seconds.

Could a simple thing like the battery be the cause of all this? I seem to recall that I replaced the battery about a year ago, and that was after several years of use with the original battery.
