eMac won't boot from FW device

I am having trouble getting my emac to boot from an external CD rom with Mac OS X in it. When I boot up the machine I hold down option to get the list of bootable volumes. Just the internal drive shows up. Once the machine is booted, I can access the cdrom, just not when booting.
 
What disk are you using to try and boot the eMac? An OS X install CD/DVD? Retail version? System-specific (gray colored) version? A Windows CD??
