emacs colors?

So I at long last have emacs on my Mac

Anyone have any luck or prognosis on how/when we can get context-sensitive coloring working (ie. fontlock or hl319)?

Given that the simple

emacs -bg black -fg white has no effect, I'm not sure I'm too optimistic about the built in version, but...

After playing around booting in console mode and using text based software a bit, I'm thinking that the curses library is, shall we say, incomplete. I've not even gotten inverse text in console mode. I'm going to try compiling and installing curses.
