emailing word documents

Hi recently when emailing word documents, the recipients are reporting that the document opens in gibberish- actually, it opens in text edit format and will not convert to word. when I email said document to myself (the same computer), the doc. opens properly- any thoughts? help..

10.4.11 flat panel imac
apple mail
microsoft office X

recently I did add perian- but I used the installed software to delete it.. don't know if that removes all the elements, but I am not even sure it is responsible for the glitch.
 
Don't know if you tried/had success with the above suggestion, but when I've run into that problem, I've simply stuffed/zipped the file. However, once had to go the other way and send an uncompressed file. Go figure.
 
hi that seemed to work. Any idea on why that step (admittedly, not really a nuisance) should be required? I am just curious. Thanks

Not 100% sure, but I believe it has something to do with how the email program encrypts the files; protection against potential viruses.
