Embarrassingly Simple Window Question

How does one go about closing those mini-windows using the keyboard. For example, in OS 9, those little yellow windows would pop up and command-w would not get rid of them.

Of course, OS X doesn't have the little yellow windows, but I was doing something (can't remember what) and came across a mini-window that would not respont to command-w.

Little windows? I remember those stickies, but I'm sure you aren't talking about those. I did find by accident today, probably widely known already, but Apple+Click the name of a open window reveals it's path, a list of folders to the root of the partition. Even in safari goes to the root of a site.

Not stickies.

In OS 9, you sometimes get messges such as, "Finder needs your attention," in a small, yellow window. It was a bit annoying trying to close one of those with a trackpad.

oooo, i get those in 9, saying there is something wrong with... partition. And they keep popping up until i run Norton or go back to X. I wish i knew, because the close button is like 5 pixels.
