Encyrypting web traffic

Hi, I am attempting to encrypt web traffic on my mac, I have tiger.

I am trying to follow this guide:

http://lifehacker.com/software/ssh/...ng-session-with-an-ssh-socks-proxy-237227.php

But it does not work properly. I am not sure if I am supposed to execute that command as a normal user or as root? It always says operation timed out. When I actually try to use the browser it says the proxy is refusing connections.

So I thought it was my firewall? So I enabled ssh and unblocked it, still no go.

As normal user.
Is your proxy set up to accept connections for that port you are using? Can you get a valid ping response? Is the proxy behind a router or something that would need port forwarding?

Ok it works now. I used it as a normal user and yes in fact I had to do the port forwarding thing on my router for it to work. This is great thanks for the help.

I think I was also doing it wrong by using my public IP and not the internal IP, would it matter?
