"Enter" key

To find a folder in a long list of files, I usually type it in using my keyboard and then hit the enter key to browse the folder that was selected. Atleast thats what I use to do in the dark days of using a PC. However, with mac when I hit the enter key, it tries to rename the folder; is there anyway to change the usage of this key to select/browse the folder?
 
type the first letter of the file you want to find and it will get you to the first file that starts with that letter. It's not perfect, but it could help if you have a long list of files.
 
ya, I've got that, but when I click the enter key, it tries to rename the folder or file. I'm looking for the enter key to lauch the file or browse the folder.
 
With the folder of the desired file or folder, the front most item - merely begin typing - not concluding with pressing the <return> or <enter> key.

Once the item is found and selected (not highlighted - as would happen, should you then press the <return> or <enter> key), perform a 'Command O' ['Finder' 'File, Open' menu item], to open the folder or cause the default application of the selected file to open said file.
 
In list you can also tap the right arrow to expand the folder's contents. In column view, the right arrow will enter the folder, as well.

In addition to command-O, command-down arrow will also open files or folders. Command-up arrow will take you to the folder that contains the current directory. That is to say, command-up will take you UP one level in the file hierarchy, while command-down will take you DOWN one level (it makes sense if you're a geek).
 
On the Mac, to open a folder or launch a file from the keyboard you have to hit Command-O on the keyboard. Simple as that. :)
 
I found this weird at first as well (windows convert), but once you get used to it, it's fine. The command-arrow combo becomes especially useful. You can also use command-down to open a file, not just a folder. Besides, it's kind of nice to be able to rename a file so easily.
