Entourage 11.4.0 corrupted-how to get working version of one program in Office 2004?

Is my best solution to delete and reinstall Entourage 11.4.0? The problem:
My copy of Office for Mac 2004 Entourage 11.4.0 was corrupted today when downloading mail. Accessing mail via Blackberry 8330 showed that physical gaps were email messages that weren't in Entourage Inbox.
When I attempted to do anything--click in gaps to get missing messages, delete messages, etc., I got a screen saying Unknown Error (4362).

Now the delete/save options are grayed out.

I see no point in downloading the Office 11.5.5 update and changing the whole suite, because I'm getting a new mac and Office 2008 by the end of the summer.
If my best solution is to reinstall Entourage 11.4.0, how to I reinstall only one Office Program? (I still have the Office 2004 disk.)

Email is critical to my business. Thanks in advance,
Susan

I have not tried it with MS Office but you can try the software Pacifist which allows you to install parts of an installation--like individual elements or even elements of elements. In my experience, if you check every folder, you can make sure you download the correct things.

BUT . . .

I did this with my PURCHASED [!--Ed.] meg2 for QuickTime because the [CENSORED--Ed.] installer would not quite work now that SL has the USEless QuickTime X--which does not read the movie files that need it

.

Worked like a charm.

Then I tried to update my--PURCHASED--QuickTime Pro from 7.6.3 to 7.6.4 because . . . it . . . is . . . like . . . 0.0.1 better and the [CENSORED--Ed.] kept telling me I already had QT X.

I used Pacifist to install the correct elements and it frelled the WHOLE volume beyond recognition.

Fortunately, I backed up before 'xperimentin' and restored myself. Always a good idea :).

SO . . . this may be as easy as you seeing the Entourage installer in the folders, clicking on it, pouring a cup of coffee and happily getting on with your life, or as hard as it opening a portal to the Ninth Ice-Plane of Hell, sucking your soul into an eternity of pain that involves Celine Dion on the intercom leaving you forced to communicate as a ghostly vision through Dell Monitors to orphans in Schenectady.

THEREFORE . . . if you do not now, get yourself a Big Ass [Tm.--Ed.] External HD, back everything up, then play. I doubt that re-installing Entourage in that fashion, even if FAIL'd, will ruin anything other than the rest of your M$ Office. However, when you get your new Mac and all you use the Ex-HD. In fact, you can use it to store "you," hook it up to your new Mac, and use Migration Assistant to bring "you" over.

OR

You could just re-install Entourage from your Office 2004 Installation Disk. . . .

I have one . . . decided to see if Pacifist would work easily with it . . . and discovered you can just install/re-install the individual applications:

That might be . . . just a wee bit . . . easier.

Susan:

Why would you think that the Entourage application itself is damaged, when evidence points to the mail database being damaged (which is just a data file that Entourage uses, and can be deleted, fixed, restored or backed-up independent of the Entourage application itself)?

It's quite possible that the Entourage application is functioning properly, but your Microsoft mail/user database is hosed.

First, try rebuilding the database:

J.D., thanks so much!! New to Forum so not sure if I'm replying to you correctly--and obviously can't use Entourage!

**You're right--using the Office 2004 install disk and installing only Entourage is the more direct solution (am familiar with WMV/Quicktime inadequacies; had so many problems with Flip4Mac/WMV that they suggested I get my money back! Now have Real Player and will get latest VLC Media Player when I have new machine and OS X 10.6).

BTW I have an external hard drive and backed up my Hard drive yesterday. (Use DiskWarrior for repair and optimize--invariably have to Repair from Preview disk, so have partitioned the Hard Drive, so that neither Hard Drive or Copy is start-up disk, and use Super Duper to copy optimized disk back and forth. Only takes about two rounds for optimized start-up drive to result--so I greatly appreciated your censored comments!!)

Probably couldn’t get a working version of Entourage just by copying that back-up to start-up drive—that would be too easy.

**But how do I get upgrades just to Entourage, to get to version 11.4.0? And is there an Uninstall program? I generally use App Delete but have never used it with one application in a suite.

You've been very generous to send 2 replies--please excuse my follow-up question. With many thanks in advance,
Susan

You may also consider getting Perian. One problem I noticed--and it is alluded to up there--is a lot of AVI, WMV for some reason--I am not a video guru--need the QT mpeg2. Apple will tell you QT X will play them, but it does not, and--in conversation--admit that they still sell the QT mpeg2 for that reason!

You probably do not need to go through that hassle--I use to consider that but for what end? It exists to recover your Internal HD. If you need to do that you are going to check, optimize, et cetera your Int-HD at the end of that. It is faster for you to do that, THEN simply reclone your Ex-HD. Yes, I use to "check" my clone in my regular Paranoia . . . when I could just update the clone.

What is important--not for this case--is that your clone is "bootable." Since you have SuperDuper!, that should not be an issue. Time Machine way back would not do that which is why I got SD. I believe it does now.

The advantage to "bootable" is to boot your computer if your Int-HD dies or you do something to your volume/OS such that you might like to still use the computer while you are transferring yourself.

I do not use Entourage, but I never had a problem the few times with copying over. With some programs you will have to re-enter your serial numbers for obvious reasons. I have never had to do that with, say, M$ Word.

**But how do I get upgrades just to Entourage, to get to version 11.4.0?

It should auto-update assuming it is a legitimate copy. Or you can download the updates. They will update what needs to be updated.

In uninstalling programs, it depends on the Uninstaller. Some programs uninstall easily--others leave "things" on your computer. App-Delete catches a lot but may not catch it all. I have never had to uninstall my M$ Office products.
