erase hard drive on sad macs

I have a computer graveyard in my spare bedroom for fear of donating or recycling old Macs with data still on them.
1) first generation Intel Imac that has overheating issue that couldn't be economically fixed - this unit won't boot up, but the hard drive (and data I'm assuming) is still intact.

2) Macbook that has been run over a little on the corner, display is bad but again, hard drive is still intact.

I'd like to donate to local Goodwill Computerworks for re-use (parts maybe) but not sure how to wipe hard drive. Or if I send off to recycle, should I be concerned about data when the computers don't really work?

Am I being too paranoid?
Should I just hose the whole thing down to corrupt the drive?
Smash the hard drive?

Advice appreciated.
