Error 36 when copy over file

I need help understanding why I am getting this error code in transfering over a file. I am using a Mac mini 10.5.7 os.
 
basically just a read/write error. I see it alot when trying to get data off of bad hard drives. Could be a bad sector on the drive. But mostly it seems like the files are corrupt when I run into it.
 
What do you mean by "transferring over a file?"

Are you copying a file TO a server share? FROM a server share? If so, what kind of server share -- SAMBA/CIFS? AFP? NFS? FTP? SFTP?

Are you copying the files TO an external hard drive? FROM an external hard drive? If so, what kind of external hard drive -- FireWire 400? FireWire 800? USB 2.0? eSATA?

Please elaborate... greatly.
