error after installing Jaguar os 10.2

PowermacG4_450

OS X Jaguar
"the program you are using needs to use a system file that may reduce the security of your computer.

the file "symfs.kext" has problems that may reduce the security of your computer. you should contact the manufacturer of the product you are using for a new version. if you are sure the file is ok, you can allow the application to use it, or fix it and use it. if you click dont use, any other files that depend on this file will not be used. "...

so, what does all this crap mean?

is it just trying to say I should upgrade the program? this error didnt occur with os 10.1.5. so its new to me. :(

you should maybe include a list of software you're using that not EVERYBODY is using. it seems to me like you _do_ have a package installed that mac os x 10.2 doesn't like. can you figure out what that .kext belongs to? is it a hardware driver? what is it for? does the maker of the driver have a new one?

good idea. I first saw it after launching IE 5.2 (didnt happen using os 10.1.5).

Just now, it happened after the mac booted up! I didnt even launch a program this time!

how can I figure out what the .kext belongs too? is there a way?

I'm speculating... do you have DAVE on your Mac? this happened to the iBook of a friend of mine, and the only unusual thing she had was DAVE....

Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I'll throw out my understanding of these messages. Basically, what you are seeing is an alert that some program is trying to load an extension to the kernel (hence, .kext.) The microkernel nature of Darwin allows these quasi-drivers to be loaded and unloaded on the fly. Of course, it's bad for security if some kind of auditing is not performed on these operations, and so you get the described message when the program tries to load the module. At that point, you can decide whether you want it to be loaded.

The kextstat command will give you a listing of all the loaded kernel modules. Find the name of the extension in question, and see if the find command can figure out where it's coming from:
Code:
find / -name 'symfs.kext'

That will list all instances of the file on your computer. If you're lucky, it's buried somewhere inside an application bundle (.app) and you'll be able to tell instantly what's loading it.

this clears things up for me. LMAO. ;)

I think I prefered the days when UNIX was NOT a part of the Mac.

You can pretty much ignore every line that says permission denied. That's just the find command telling you where it can't look. If you run it as root, you won't see those, but it might take a little longer.

This is the interesting line:
/System/Library/Extensions/symfs.kext

So that explains where it is, but still leaves the question of where the heck it came from.

I got several of those errors when using Norton Utilities.

On the symantec site there is an advise not to let it be used.

Ive read that installing jaguar again may help? Im not sure I beleive that though. ????

It seems like I read somewhere that that .kext is related to Norton AntiVirus. Do, or did, you have NAV installed?

That seems like a fair guess: sym = Symantec, fs = filesystem. It sounds like a kernel extension that allows some Norton software to access low level features of the disk in order to perform repairs.

Yep, I "had" NAV on there, then deleted. But cant delete it! Not all of it anyway.

I guess I'll keep getting the error until symantec offers fix. ?
