Eudora 6.2.4 running VERY slow under 10.6

Hi,

I have a Macbook Pro around 3 years old (Intel) 2GHz, 2Gb.

I upgraded to Snow leopard a few weeks ago and had very few problems until today..

My Eudora (6.2.4) starts OK, but then runs extremely slow. Activity monitor shows it using around 90% of CPU..

I have downloaded and re-installed it, reloaded it from a backup, tried deleting the settings file etc, but it still runs impossibly slow.

I read somewhere that there may be a problem with running notification sounds under 10.6, but I cant get into the Eudora settings menu to check or change them (and why would this suddenly start to cause a problem now when its been running ok for several weeks?).

I pulling my hair out and getting desperate to fix this.. I have a huge archive of emails and I rely on Eudora to run my business, and I really need to get this fixed.

Other applications run fine (but a little slow as Eudora is hogging CPU cycles?).

Can anyone suggest what I can do to resolve this problem please?

Thanks

It is time that you came to grips with the fact that Eudora 6.2.4 is ancient email client has not been updated since 2006 and will never be updated again. The unusual thing is not that it runs slowly, but that it runs at all.

Eudora 6.2.4 is PPC-only and requires Rosetta to run on an Intel-based Mac. Under MacOS X 10.6, Rosetta is no longer a part of the default installation. Whether or not this has anything to do with your issue is anyone's guess.

However, it is not ambiguous that it is time to move on. If you like the name Eudora, then you should look into the Thunderbird-based Eudora 8 beta 8. At this stage in its development, it is just a reskinned Thunderbird but it does sport the Eudora icon and widgets.

When I made the switch from MacOS 9 to MacOS X, I transferred my email accounts and messages to Mail and have not looked back. Eudora 6 simply does not properly render the vast majority of email that I receive. OTOH, Mail does a beautiful job with no surprises. Eudora 8 also does a beautiful job, but appears to be not quite as easy to use.

There are other modern email clients that are advertised as being like Eudora. You may look into these. You have options. Choose one and move on.

My Eudora 6.2.4 is still running fine on 10.6.2 ! :)

But I have a contingency plan ready for the day it fails!!

I'm aware of the issues with Eudora thanks and I have downloaded and tried Eudora/Thunderbird and looked at other options, but all of them are at best a compromise and dont offer the ease of use and the features that Eudora do...

The fact that 6.2.4 has been running fine (with rosetta) under 10.6 for several weeks leads me to think that changing to a new email application will not help with this problem, and do you really think that migrating to a new email app should be done while I have an existing problem..?

I was really hoping that someone would come up with something a bit more helpful in actually resolving the problem that I have, rather than telling me what they think Ive been doing wrong (which is a moot point anyway).

Thanks anyway.

You make a compelling argument. The fact that Eudora 6 had been working well on your current system and that it works less well now means that something on your system changed. Only you know what has changed. Only you can change it back.

Nothing changed that I am aware of (I made no upgrades or modifications, no software updates etc). Having worked for IBM and Apple as a hardware tech, I am the first to suspect that any problems are due to recent changes, but I cant pin this down to anything that Ive done.

I backed off the Eudora folder to an external, set up a new account with admin authority on my Mac Book Pro and loaded Eudora onto that and it runs 100% fine. I then turned off the Eudora sounds (in notifications) as apparently these can cause problems under 10.6 and chose system sounds instead. I also did a bit of housekeeping and slimmed down and deleted a load of old emails (junk and trash folders were very full).
I then backed it off again and loaded it back onto my profile and its all running fine again.

I dont know what the problem was, but sometimes you dont need to know in order to fix things.!

Eudora does everything that I want it to (mutiple accounts, filtering etc etc) and we use it to run our business on 3 Macs (of varying age).
I have tried Thunderbird/penelope, but its not yet as good as Eudora was. When it gets up to speed and has the same functionailty and ease of use as Eudora, I may switch... until then, I will stick with whats working.
Thanks.

Posting a clarification for anyone else who has this problem;

I basically got it running properly again after changing the notification sounds to use system sounds;
Eudora>Preferences>Getting Attention>Sounds

I use Submarin and Purr, but I think any of the sounds supplied with the OS should work.

Apparently the default Eudora sounds require some kind of emulation under OS/X which drags down the system.?

It wasnt easy even getting into Eudora Prefs as it was running so badly (see previous post), but after I changed the sounds and restarted, it was fine again immediately and has worked OK for the last three months.

Ah!

That was a known problem. Eudora was having problems when using its own sounds, possibly from the introduction of OSX? Can't remember exactly.

I've had the sounds turned off for ages. I'm surprised that it worked OK for so long and only failed now. That's why I never considered mentioning a sound problem. Sorry!
