I have a macbook (Intel Core Duo running at 2.16) which I would like to use with an external monitor or a video projector. Although I have the adapter I used with my old iBook G3 500, it won't fit into the monitor port on my MacBook, and I don't know what to get. If I could see pictures instead of just reading the various initials of the different connectors, it would help!

That's a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.
You may need a mini-DVI to DVI, instead. Depends on the connectors that you have on your external display or projector. Here's that one -
