EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE problems

I know this has come up in other threads, but nothing seems to be working...

Appleworks and First Class are both coming up with an "unexpectedly quit" message for a few of our users... for others they work just fine on the same machines...

I've tried stripping plists, appleworks prefs, recent items, pretty much everything from the users accounts but still no go!...

the log gives a Thread 0 Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS and Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE report... and I know one "fix" suggests this may be a font problem, but if it is why is it only a font problem with selective users?... they have no additional fonts listed in their library?!

any assistance would be greatly appreciated... the problem now seems to be following one teacher in particular around to other computers...
 
Please post the crash log. Those are general memory access errors that could be caused by a lot of things. If it's only happening with one or 2 users then it's probably something to do with that user's account. You can create a new account for that user if you have to and transfer over the preference files and whatever else they need.
 
without posting the entire log, it appears to be Thread 0 that is crashing... lines 5 through 8 reference printer info...

I understand that AW might look to the printer file first when opening?... we've had some mysterious printer lists crop up here... most due to multiple entries for en EpsonC80N that isn't even connected to the network! (sometimes upwards of 30 different listings for this printer)... could this abundance of printers in the users printer list be causing a problem?

One user has 4 different plists

com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist
com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
com.apple.print.PrinterProxy.mcx_1.plist
com.apple.print.PrinterProxy.mcx_53.plist

whereas the other user that can't use AW has only the first listed plist... but does have (had) the extreme list of printers...

have trimmed the printer lists and also rid the other user of their .mcx plists... will see if this works first

Could be corrupted printer preferences for sure. Corrupt preferences cause a lot of application crashes. You can attach the whole log if you put .jpg as the extension that wan you don't have to paste it into the post.

Thread 0 could be anything within the program so you can't really tell just from that.
 
Hi CC...
have tried deleting the printer prefs it doesn't change anything... also trimmed the printers to 2 available... no change... so have attached the 3 logs... 1 for user mw is the AppleWorks log, the other 2 are for user tg and are both the AppleWorks and FirstClass Client logs... thanks again for your help... I have also tried changing the tag to .jpg but when I try and upload it it says it is an invalid file type and won't allow the upload... so I apologize in advance for the length of the post... have cut and pasted the last log entry only from one users file only...

I think that it's crashing when trying to get the name of your default printer. See CPLCopyDefaultPrinterName and CPLPrinterNameInUse.

Seems that it can't get the printer name and its a bug in the software that can't catch the error. I'd delete all your printers from the list and try opening AppleWorks and see if it works then. Then if it does, add one printer and test it again to see if it works or not.
 
oh well... that didn't work either... deleted all the printers and tried to reboot AW... AW actually always starts up... its when we try to open a new, or old document that it crashes... any suggestions?
 
we don't really use any shared docs... its when they try and open a new document in AW or, now, none of their old ones as well, that it crashes... although they do seem to be able open them on a few other computers... the computers in question are maninly our old imac 500mhz running 10.3.5... as are most of the other emacs and 600Mhz imacs around the school... there are 2 imacs in particular that seem to be posing this problem... would it somehow be computer related?... if so why do other users not have the same problems... permissions are identical for all!
 
in our case here... the teacher is having problems on one machine only on our network... she can open both AW and First Class on other macs throughout the school... so it seems to be a problem with this one mac only in this case... but only for users who do not have admin access... ie, I can open up a new AW document and and older one in AW on the same mac she is having probs on!

is my only recourse here to reformat the mac in question... or do you think a sys software update maybe fix the problem?
