ext monitor problems with g4 powerbook

Hey..

I recently purchased a 12" powerbook and a 19" LaCie monitor... everything works fine, very impressed with os x... but i need to turn OFF mirroring in order to up the 19" monitor to a decent resolution.. and hence i am left with a blank powerbook screen set to be on the right of the ext monitor displays desktop area.

i am concerned about the powerbook LCD monitor as nothing happens on that screen but i have found if i close the lid, both screens go to sleep.. so the lid has to stay open and be a blank desktop- which i'm sure can't be good for it over long periods of time.

my question is... are there any methods for getting a screensaver on my laptop screen without interrupting my external one? even if anyone knows of a small graphics program i could run in that area of my desktop [i've tried the iTunes visuals but they use alot more processor speed than i can afford to loose].

Cheers,

Dave*

With the brighness controls you can effectively shut down (dim until black = off) your PB screen when you keep it open.

Closing the lid makes it go to sleep, but you should be able (with external mouse and keyboard) to work with the lid closed. The screen of the PB will be shut off but everything should run just fine. There should be no heat issues, since the main disspation is through the vents and the underside.

Dear Oxygenaddict,

The solution you need is known as the "close lid" method, but for this, you need an external keyboard and mouse.

Close lid method:
1. Power down your PowerBook.
2. Plug in, keyboard, mouse, power supply and monitor cable. Make sure your monitor is on thou.
3. Press the "Power" key on your PowerBook, and as soon as you hear the "chime" close the lid on your PowerBook.
4. The machine will boot up as normal. You will thou only have one monitor.

Hope it helps.

You don't need to restart ... just connect the ext. monitor, set it up as you like in Monitor Pref.Panel, move the toolbar to ext monitor, close lid, press any button on ext. keyboard: PB wakens, internal screen off, ext. monitor OK -> ready for work.

Want you internal LCD back? Monitors-> detect monitors -> BLING!

Why restart?
