External device problem

Hi there

I am a Powerbook G4 12" user with Mac os x 10.4.2 tiger.
For the purpose of archiving all my multimedia archive, recently I got myself a Philips 120 gb external device, and backed up all data from my cds and hdd.

My problem, on the other hand, is
When I do not use, or access any file from these external drives (I partitioned it to two; E and F drives) it simply shuts itself down and makes it impossible to reach & work any file in itself thru any application; unless booting. Namely when I listen mp3 songs from this external device thru itunes; everything is normal. However, after stopping playing songs and doing nothing with any files on these drives (photos, videos, etc) in 10-15 minutes; led on the drive turns off and Mac Os makes it impossible to reach the drive again. Only solution remains: Reboot the system.

Waiting for any help & Appreciate any response
Thanks!

01. Select the 'Apple, System Preferences...' menu item. A window (possibly titled 'System Preferences') will appear.
02. Click on the 'Energy Saver' utility icon.
03. If the 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' check box contains a check mark - click on the check box to remove the check mark.
04. Click on the window's 'red' jelly bean crayola crayon 'close' box. 'System Preferences' will quit.

If the above steps do not apply or work for you ... the external hard disk drive may be experiencing a thermal shutdown, due to excessive heat, and its associated FireWire logic is disconnecting (un-mounting) itself from the FireWire chain. I have seen this with Maxtor hard disk drives, although - it may apply to other brands as well.

Thank you very much barhar,
i really appreciate your help.
my external hdd full-time works now, no sleeping ever:)
