Whenever I wake up my computer while I have an external firewire drive attached (specifically, a Smartdisk FireLite 30), the drive appears mounted on the desktop, however, the power light on the drive is off, and when I try to access the drive by double clicking it, it hangs up my finder the the point of having to restart (usually by holding powerbutton or even unplugging). I also have the same issue with a Maxtor 3000DV 80GB FW drive. I actually had to unplug the drive while the finder hung up, causing the drive to be unreadable once everything was rebooted and plugged back in (hoping Techtool pro can fix that), giving the message asking to initialize or eject the drive.
In my experiences with X, firewire seems a bit sluggish to react to external drives. This was very noticeable when I first upgraded to Jaguar on an older, suped-up B&W G3 (which required me to by a PCI firewire card due to prob with Jag and the built in FW ports), and even now on my dual 2ghz G5.
Does anyone know what could be causing this, possible work arounds and how to report this to Apple?
Thanks in advance for your superior knowledge.

The drive, along with a Maxtor DV3000 80GB that I also use, always worked seemlessly with OS 9.
