external FW drive, slow mounting, kachunk noise

I have an external FW drive on my intel iMac, OSX 10.5

I was using Lightroom and accessing some images. The drive started making a kachunk, kachunk, kachunk sound.

I eventualy restarted the system. Took a long time to mount on the desktop. It's still kachunking away as the file directory slowly begins to display.

This is feeling like a hardware issue.

Anybody had this happen before?

Am hoping that I can get the thing fully mounted and get the files copied off.

thanks

gf

Oh, now when I open the "Force Quit" window it says Finder not responding.

Yes, back up the data immediately.

A "clunking" sound indicates that the drive is dying... not that it's going to die, but that it is in the middle of the dying process right now. There's really no fix for it -- just get the data off of the drive, purchase a new drive, and restore the data back to the new drive.
