External Hardrive Unrecognizable

I have a pretty new iomega external hardrive that i just backed up a lot of important files to. However, as of today my computer cannot recognize the external hardrive when i connect it to my Macbook Pro. I checked in disk utility and the hardrive is recognized there, when i Verify the drive an error comes up and says "invalid sibling link" and says the volume should be repaired. I'm hesitant to do so because of the valuable files i have on my external. Would this repair action erase whats on my external drive?

The drive only has one partition (Master Boot Record). Any advice about how can i can get the computer to recognize the hardrive? Thanks

Since "invalid sibling link" most likely means that the problem is in file system, repairing is only thing you can do. Ok, you could try to take image copy of the disk (for example with dd command) and if the repairing failed, you could write the copy back to the disk and try something else. However this works only if the problem is only on the file system, not in the disk itself.
