Extracting the icon from an .app file?

I'd like to extract the icon from an .app file under Leopard. I know how to get Info about the application and then select the icon for copying as the icon of a different application, but what I'd like to do is create a stand-alone file which contains the given application's icon image, such as an .icns file or perhaps a .png.

I've seen a number of freeware and shareware utilities that claim to be able to do this, but before I start experimenting with them, I'm wondering if there's a way to extract an application's icon using the standard facilities that come with Leopard.

Thanks in advance.

  3. Open Contents.
  4. Open Resources.
  5. Locate files with .icns extensions.
