Failed install of 10.5.6, now doesn't recognize software

I attempted to install Leopard 10.5.6 onto my MacBook. It got about halfway through the installation process, but then said there was a problem and it said to eject the disc and restart.

Now, I was able to restart the laptop, but it took a while and I get to a blank desktop with just the icons on the bottom of the screen (though they don't work if I click on them). I am going to get a new install disc, but I just tested the old one again and nothing happens, it just makes sounds.

When I get the new disc, is there a way to restart my computer so that it automatically installs the software? Or perhaps it does that automatically if there's a Mac OS X disc in there?

Thanks for the help in advance!

It sounds like your optical drive may have crapped out during install? Hope you made a backup before you started the install? If not you may still have problems even if it does successfully install next time. Personally I would make a backup while still possible and try to zero the drive, install, updates, then load my data back on. Try to put any bootable type cd/dvd (like perhaps the install DVDs that came with the macbook) in the optical drive and try to go to boot manager holding the option key at startup. That will tell you if its reading any disks or if its maybe just that particular disk you have.
