failed internet connection via ethernet

suddenly my internet connection is not working on my imac os 10.4.7.

i have been connecting to the internet (dial up / internal modem) via my g4 powerbook using ethernet cross-cable.
each time i connect i renew the DHCP lease in the network pane of system preferences.
for some reason today that's not working (internet working on powerbook).

Network status says ethernet is active but in safari it says i'm not connected to the internet.

i tried nslookup in Terminal and it says:
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

i don't really understand why it would suddenly not work, tried switching it all off and on again...

anyone any ideas?
cheers

Not that this is very helpful, but I am experiencing the exact same problem, via the ethernet port. I was running 10.4.7 and after installing the daylight savings corrections, I was unable to connect (this could just be a coincidence). I even did a clean install just to see, to no avail. The problem persisted.

It can't be the port itself, because I can print from it. Frustrating.
