fibre link speeds comapability

i know gigabit is backwards compatible but does this apply with fibre links. if i was to have an ethernet switch with a gigabit fibre card would this work with a fast ethernet switch?

i ask this because my network is split in half by a fibre link. at either end is a switch and at one end is a router. both ends can network with each other but there is no traffic and/or communication down the fibre link so i basically have two independant networks. any ideas?

thank you

jon

No I dont think that would work because the standards are different in fiber. For example if your card is 100Mb/FX on one side then i think it would have to be the same on the other. There are many different types of gigabit fiber links and I believe they all operate on different wavelengths. ie 1000SX or 1000LX

But Im no expert so dont just take my word for it.

thanx now i've got a good excuse to upgrade the link that some idiot installed. anyhows it would be very wise to connect two heavily used switches with a gigabit link
