File Arrangement Settings

In my Downloads folder, how can I get the files to be sorted by date downloaded, and have them neatly arrange themselves onto a grid? Right now they overlap each other and it looks messy.

I also only want this set for the Downloads folder alone.
 
Do you need to use icon view for your download folder?
Change your download folder to list view, and click the header so you sort by Date created, or date modified. Then, close the folder. It should then stay that way, assuming you always enter your download folder using the same method.
The system doesn't keep track of download date for files, AFAIK...
I can't think of any reason one would need to track when a file is downloaded - can you?
 
Actually there is a way. Search for "A script to sort the Downloads folder by download date" Nov 15 2006 in this forum. Still works in Snow Lepord.

If you use Safari as your browser, Glims has a setting to create dated download Folders which works well for me.

That works, thanks!

I store a lot of files in my downloads folder (pictures, work projects, etc etc) things that I need for a few weeks, but don't warrant having their own folder. I like the most recent projects in front.

EDIT: I don't care about the exact date and time it was downloaded, I just need the order maintained
