File owner is "938"?!

My root (/) directory has a number of symbolic links which are of course supposed to be there, but they are all owned by a weird user that doesn't exist on my system. Is it possible that one of these PKG installers I've used set them incorrectly? What should the owner be? Here are the offending directory entries:

lrwxrwxr-t 1 938 unknown 13 Jul 15 10:30 cores -> private/cores
lrwxrwxr-t 1 938 unknown 11 Jul 15 10:30 etc -> private/etc
lrwxrwxr-t 1 938 unknown 9 Jul 15 10:30 mach -> /mach.sym
lrwxrwxr-t 1 938 unknown 11 Jul 15 10:30 tmp -> private/tmp
lrwxrwxr-t 1 938 unknown 11 Jul 15 10:30 var -> private/var

Well that's good to know, but I was more concerned with the general idea that something might have changed them when I wasn't aware of it. Of course there's not much I can do about it unless I avoid using PKG installers altogether.
