FileMaker 6 Crashes when starting up

We have a new (Intel) iMac 20" that won't run FileMaker Pro 6.
It crashes when trying to start FileMaker. It will run fine on another user account on this same iMac but after a while, it starts to crash on the new user account too. Here is a copy of the crash report. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you made sure you're running the latest update of FileMaker 6? Go here and look for FileMaker 6.0v4 updater (look under "updaters and support files for previous versions, just under "Recent Software updates"
 
I really only have a few elementary suggestions, but mainly, i suggest reporting this to FileMaker.

&#8226; Repair Permissions,
&#8226; Reinstall FileMaker 6.
&#8226; Remove any FileMaker preferences that may have been carried over from an older machine (tho you never stated if that's even the case)
&#8226; If all else fails (and it's my least favorite suggestion) upgrade to FM8.

We use FileMaker on every Mac in my company, but we upgraded to 8v3 before implenting any Intel Macs, and haven't had any problems thus far.

Good luck in finding a workable solution.
 
I always try "Repair Disk Permissions" first with most problems.

No old FileMaker preferences where moved to the new iMac.

I would like to use FileMaker 8 but our programers are draging thier feet on upgrading all our databases. We are still running FileMaker 5 Server.

Ah, shame. Is this an isolated incident? Are there other Intel Macs running FM6 just fine? I ask because I can't find any documentation suggesting this is a widespread issue.

The one thing you didn't list in your reply is the uninstall/reinstall. And also, it comes to mind, make sure you install from the Admin account. I've had bad experiences when installing FM from a user account, from crashing to simply not loading, to persisting permissions errors.

I know this is all elementary stuff, but it's not a documented issue with a documented solution. I'll keep digging for you, see if i can come up with some real advice. Good luck, in the meantime!

(and stomp on your FM developers to upgrade, FM8 server is wicked useful)
 
Another thing to try. Delete all instances of FileMaker on the offending computer (prefs and all) and copy over the FileMaker 6 Application folder from another machine (intel or not, won't hurt).

Since FileMaker is self-contained within its folder, we've often installed it on multiple Macs (both intel & G5) by moving a copy of the FileMaker 6 folder from our Server to the Mac, to great success (and we have a volume license, so no it's not illegal ;) )
 
Yes, this is our first Intel iMac. Other macs (G5 towers with 10.04) run FileMaker 6 with no problem. I did try unistalling and reinstalling and the user accounts have admin rights. What puzzels me is why new accounts work fine but stop working after a few hours.
 
Sounds like it's a hardware issue in that the Intel Mac is not a PowerPC (PPC) Mac and FM 6 is looking for hardware specific information since it's a PPC application. You're able to run it through Rosetta which is the layer that makes the application think it's running on a PowerPC Macintosh.
 
...although mine was perfectly fine for a few months of use, and only started hanging up my machine as of last week.

This is a real crash/hang - no force-quit, no kernel-panic nothing - just have to power off! That is something I had never seen on an OSX mac before (and we have 100).
 
I just deleted all preferences for Filemaker from my home directory (everything with the word filemaker in the filename)...

And now it works fine.

Although I am still concerned about the ability of any application, Rosetta included, to be able to hang the computer!
