Folders are just losing files in big clusters and i cant get back to them. the OS thinks i am a new user all of a sudden . i changed the name of the HD and that seemed to start the problem. what can i do?

Its hard to imagine that would cause the problem. Perhaps you had a power interruption, which might have disrupted Finder somehow. Or perhaps you are running out of HD space.

How long has it been happening?
Had you installed any add-ons, extra software or anything unusual?
Have you rebooted since it started happening? I have seen some issues a few years back where files simply weren't *appearing* in the Finder, and a reboot fixed that.
Also do you offer any network services (file sharing, FTP, Windows network, etc) that might mean other computers are accessing your HD? Or have you plugged the HD into anything else?

i have installed some pieces of software from MACWORLD i will take them out and see if it makes a difference . . . i have re-booted, done a disk repair now, no one else is logged in or ftp'ing
