Final Cut Express 4 Audio Problems

Here is my problem. Whenever i import mp3 files into FCE4 and render them there is a ticking noise that plays with the audio. the best way to describe it is like it has a built in off beat metronome playing with it. it is really annoying and i cant figure out why it does it. please help if you can
