finder not responding

Hi folks I have a iBook G4 and I'm running 10.3.9 on it. I've had it for just over a year and had a new hard drive put in it 2months ago after the previous one failed.

But....

My finder all of a sudden isn't responding.
When I switch on, my usual personal desktop background shows and the dock as usual is at the bottom.
My hard drive and all other items aren't on the desktop. I can't click on the finder logo on the dock, so I have no way of accessing my files.

My applications from the dock won't open....apart from safari, which quits after 30 seconds. I can open system preferences.

There is no menu (with file, view, help) etc at the top at all.

Here's the wierd thing though....I use skype, and it activates on start-up...I can totally still use this, and can even send my documents/pictures/mp3s to other users through this, which means my wireless is fine, and that all my files still exist.

My hard drive still appears on start-up disk, in preferences....and I managed to run a disk verify/repair by starting up on install disc 1...but this said that everything was fine with my hard drive.

Any idea whats going on? I can't even reinstall my applications right now, as I have no icons to double click on in the finder to open up from the cd-rom installers.

Oh, and this all happened this morning. I did the usual apple software upgrade (it comes up automatically) and after everything downloaded, I think I was meant to restart, i forgot though and put the computer to sleep overnight.
Woke up this morning and after opening it, then deciding I better restart it this all happened.

can anyone help??!!!

Well, sounds as if you first might consider preparing for a reinstall of the system software, by first backing up essential files.
The problem sounds a bit more advanced than what I am going to suggest.
Try deleting the Finder plist file. Then do a restart of the system. I am not clear this will work, but you can certainly give it a try and see.

think i managed to delete finder preferences by deleting it in single user mode.....no difference.

Think i'm gonnna have to link up to another mac via fireire, back up, and reinstall software.
