Finder quits every 1.5 minutes

Hi!

I am operating OSX 10.4.11 on a 2005 Power PC G5. My Finder has started quitting about every 1.5 minutes. I've trashed the preferences several times to no avail. I've trashed a couple of programs I downloaded recently and which I'm not using, but no change.

I THINK it started happening after I downloaded the most recent MAC Security Update but I'm not positive.

If I boot up in

Open /Applications/Utilities/Console and look at the logs to see what is causing it. Plus if you must download the 10.4.11 combo anmd run it. This may fix it.

Merry Christmas.

If what Satcomer suggests does not work, you may need to re-install the OS using archive
and install, but wait for a few other forum members to see your post in case they know of
a less drastic method to fix your problem.

Hello a49ersfguy :)

You could try the following, then remove the programs you downloaded to see if they were the cause ...

  • reboot

  • When the window with the progress bar and "Mac OS X" on it appears, press and hold the Shift key. timing is critical. If you press the Shift key too soon or too late, nothing will happen.

  • If Mac OS X is set up to display the Login Window, when it appears, release the Shift key long enough to type your username and password and log in. Then press and hold the Shift down again until the desktop appears. When it does, you can release the Shift key.

  • If Mac OS X is set up to automatically log in, just keep holding down the Shift key until the desktop appears. When it does, you can release the Shift key.

If you have another User Account it might be better to use that until things are properly sorted out. If you don't have one, then if possible, you can create on using System Preferences.

Hope this helps :)

BACK UP YOUR DATA!!! [!--Ed.]

Why? Because at some point you may have to Archive and Install as suggested above, but the safest is Erase and Install. This is assuming your volume is FUBAR.

I am also assuming you have already tried booting on the Installation Disk and using Disk Utility to repair your volume? If not, try that, but also consider getting a program like Disk Warrior which may fix the problem or at least "take a picture" of you data so you can save it.
