If you've made another user account and had the same problem, I would reformat the drive and reinstall the system. You can do an Archive so you won't lose any of your programs or data. Boot from the OS CD and start the install, but look at the Options to make sure you choose Archive.

So you reformated? (archive and install). If not, even if it's now working, I'd make sure there is a solid backup of all perishables and reinstall as soon as possible.
